Dr. Toyah Wilson, a licensed Clinical PsychologistDr. Wilson is a licensed Clinical Psychologist.  She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign.  She received both her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology-Chicago.  Dr. Wilson has experience working in community mental health centers, university counseling centers and private practice.  Dr. Wilson is an EMDR clinician. She has level 2 training. Dr. Wilson works with adolescents and adults to understand and address the many interwoven layers that comprise their lives.  Dr. Wilson has special interest and expertise in the areas of trauma, women’s issues, relationship concerns, life transitions, grief, depression, and anxiety, and diversity.  She has specific training and experience working with survivors of abuse and understands the importance of providing a safe, supportive, therapy relationship which allows people to take a more active role in their healing journey.

Dr. Wilson provides individual, couples and group therapy as well as seminars and curriculum development on special topics.  Dr. Wilson has led groups on: women’s issues, eating disorders and healthy eating, self injury, stress management and conflict resolution, as well as general therapy groups.  Her theoretical orientation is psychodynamic and she integrates cognitive behavioral interventions based on the unique needs of each person. Dr. Wilson has a holistic approach to treatment.  She strongly believes in the mind-body connection and utilizes coping skills that address how your concerns impact your life as a whole. Dr. Wilson uses mindfulness, meditation, deep breathing, relaxation training and guided imagery visualization as tools in therapy. Dr. Wilson’s approach to the therapy relationship is collaborative in that she acknowledges, honors, and embraces the unique skills and strengths each person brings to the therapy process.

Dr. Wilson states, “My belief about therapy is that the journey towards emotional health is one in which I work together with people to assist them in the process of self discovery, understanding and ultimately acceptance of all aspects of their true selves. I truly believe that this journey allows people to begin to live a more creative, balanced and fulfilling life.  I love my job because it is rewarding to see the growth people make once they realize they possess the internal resources to make these changes.  It is an honor and a privilege when people allow me to travel along as a guide as they embark on their personal and courageous journey.
